Why We Must Protect Public Media: A Call to Action

·338 words·2 mins
PBS Pubic Media

If you value trusted, local public media as much as I do, now is the time to speak up.

Recently, Congress voted to rescind federal funding for public media stations across the U.S. Unless lawmakers act during the Fiscal Year 2026 government spending process to restore this critical support, the consequences will be severe:

  • Rural and Tribal stations could go off the air entirely
  • Local news and educational programming would be deeply cut
  • Emergency communications and community outreach services would be weakened

These stations aren’t just background noise. They’re the backbone of informed, connected, and safe communities. Public media provides free access to fact-based journalism, lifelong learning resources, children’s programming, and vital emergency alerts.

🛑 What’s at Stake?
#

Without restored federal funding:

  • Small stations, especially in rural and Tribal areas, will struggle to survive
  • Local journalism will lose one of its last independent voices
  • Communities could be cut off from critical resources and alerts

This is not just about TV and radio. It’s about civic connection, transparency, and keeping democracy accessible for everyone, regardless of income or location.

📣 What You Can Do
#

There’s still time to reverse this, but it will take public pressure and broad support. That’s why I’ve joined the Protect My Public Media campaign. A national initiative that sends timely alerts to help supporters like you:

  • Know when to call or email lawmakers
  • Share your support with your community
  • Take action as key Congressional decisions approach

📆 September Is Critical

With major budget decisions expected in September, now is the time to sign up and be ready. The more voices that speak up, the more likely we are to protect what matters.
